Artist's Statement
Whimsical Art is generally thought of as a playful style of art that is somewhat childlike and fun. It’s commonly associated with children’s books. It can be offbeat, idiosyncratic, fantastic and/or bizarre. Some art critics may consider it to be of a lesser quality than art created by well-known revered artists. However, artists such as Picasso, Miro, and Matisse have created paintings and sculpture that have whimsical qualities. Well known artist Karel Appel’s paintings also were highly childlike but were not labelled whimsical. They are classified as belonging to the CoBrA group of highly influential artists (1948 to 1951). Nevertheless, they can be considered whimsical art.
Currently, there has been a creative surge in what I classify as Whimsical Digital Art. It appears to be primarily motivated by the NFT craze except I no longer think it’s a craze. I’ve been following its evolution since Christie’s auction of “Everydays: The First 5,000 Days” by artist Beeple. From my perspective, NFTs are here to stay as an art form, as a collector’s lure, and as an asset class. It is my opinion that the digital art shown below can qualify as all three.
